Can cats get pregnant while still nursing kittens?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Yes, cats can get pregnant while still nursing kittens. This can be very hard on cats as they are trying to make enough milk to feed their kittens while their body is also trying to feed the fetus. There are so many unwanted kittens in the world – if you aren't trying to breed her – it may be worth considering having her spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned. You should not let her roam outdoors in contact with any non-neutered male. Talk to your vet about it.
