Cat acting weird
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

Hi Dr. Jon,

My cat has quite recently started losing weight and is not eating much. She also does not like to go outside the house at all and whines to me nearly all the time. Can you possibly tell me if anything is wrong with my cat?

Jessica Holland

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Losing weight and loss of appetite are very common signs in cats and are associated with MANY different diseases. Diseases may include diabetes mellitus, cancer, and kidney disease among many others. Cats can cry or whine for many reasons – sometimes when they don't feel good or if they feel something is wrong.

A couple articles that might be helpful to you is on our Petplace.com is "Weight Loss in Cats" and "Anorexia (Loss of Appetite) in Cats"

I'd recommend having her checked by your veterinarian. They will probably want to do some baseline blood work to rule out some common problems.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
