Cat lost his appetite
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

I have 2 cats (brothers) they get along great. But 1 of them has been loosing weight. His gums are a pale pink and his tongue has white on it. His nose is moist and cool. I can't afford to go the Vet so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. His name is Elvis. Oh I just caught him eating the kitty litter. It's not the clumping kind its clay litter.

Thanks again for your help.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. I'm sorry to hear that your cat is ill. From what you wrote, you cat has been loosing weight and he is pale. Those are both very serious signs in a cat. I know you said that you don't want to take him to the vet due to your finances but that is exactly what I'd recommend. He needs medical help.

In the mean time, you can try encouraging him to eat by heating up food and offering him some of his favorites. Keep him inside, warm and dry. Offer fresh clean water as well.

Best of luck!
