Home Remedy For Removing Cat Urine Odor - Vet’s Advice
By: PetPlace Veterinarians

Do you have a home remedy for removing cat urine odor?

Someone sent me and email today asking for a home remedy for removing cat urine and I thought I'd share what I know and recommend to my clients. When removing cat urine odor, the first thing to do is to remove as much as the wet urine as possible. Use dry paper towels to soak up the urine. You can try some home remedies for removing the cat urine odor but many are not as effective as commercial products and are usually temporary. Be careful with ammonia products, since the scent of the ammonia may encourage to cat to urinate in that area again.

The most common home remedy for removing cat urine odor is to wash the area with carbonated soda water or with soapy water and rinse well. As a deterrent, you can mist the area with vinegar, perfumed soap, mouthwash or moth repellant spray. If you must use ammonia, follow it with vinegar to neutralize the ammonia scent. Another home remedy for removing cat urine odor is baking soda. However baking soda is a powder and is not able to get down deep in the carpet or the pad.

To be honest, in my experience, there is no home remedy for removing cat urine odor that works. The best way to eliminate cat urine odor is to use commercial products such as Zero Odor, Nature's Recipe or Urine Off.
