By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

I want to be a vet, how do I start?

Alexa P.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. I'm not sure how old you are but I'll try to answer your question. Veterinary medicine is a great profession and I love it. I'm glad you are interested in it too.

If you are in high school, I'd recommend learning about what college might be available in your state. The colleges of Veterinary Medicine in the United States are listed in this article Veterinary Schools in the United States. Many states that don't have schools have contracts with states that do that accept students from other states at the in-state tuition cost.

I'd recommend that you determine what course work that you need take and understand what they requirements at the school that you choose. Work hard and get good grades in college.

Also, getting a part-time job or summer job working at a veterinary clinic is very helpful. During the interview process, this can show a real understanding the profession and be beneficial to you during your application process. If you work in the college town or go to college where there is a college of veterinary medicine, try to get a part time job at the college. This will allow you to learn more about any tips on getting in, learn more about the profession and maybe make some "connections" that may help you in your chosen career path.

Best of luck!
