I am always intrigued when someone attaches a label to him or herself: "Oh!! I am a dog person." "Dogs are the way to go-they are smarter...they listen and obey, yeah, I am a dog man." "Having a cat means you are a sensitive-chicks dig that." "Cats bring out your creativity just like it did for Hemingway." And, yes, there are tons more of these "labels", but that would be a whole other column. But, for now, I just had to share with you the following story from one of our readers.
"I never really thought of myself as a cat person. I really liked dogs. I liked their unconditional love, their willingness to play and please. I didn't actually have a dog at the time as I was working long days and dog did not work with my busy work and social life.
Then, one day I found a little kitten by the road. It was flea ridden, thin, had diarrhea on its bottom and seemed very weak. I took him home and to our local veterinarian. He was estimated to be about 6 weeks old, had fleas and worms, and was malnourished.
I thought I'd be a good Samaritan and nurse this kitten back to health and find it a home. Eight years later, Sammy is still with me. He is a love. And you know what? I never know how much I could love a cat. Sammy is actually like a dog in many ways, only better. He follows me around, he likes to eat what I eat (I know it is bad but its only a nibble) and he fetches. Yes, he fetches. He doesn't bark, he doesn't wake me up to go out for a walk at 5 am, he loves to sleep and play. He is just about perfect.
Sammy is a Maine Coon and a beautiful cat. For anyone that thinks they are not a cat person, I wish you could meet Sammy. If you are looking for a cat, consider a stray. It happens that Sammy is a Maine Coon and that is also a wonderful option. "
Wow!!! Sammy could be the poster kitty for the D.O.G (Dog Only Group,) society. It just goes to show that life is full of little surprises. All you have to do is open your eyes and your heart, because, you just never know when you will come face to face with the special someone...your special cat or dog.
Until next time...
