Mini my cat is not happy
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

Hello Dr Jon,

My 2-year-old male cat "Mini" is acting strange these days - he is talking at times, he seems to be very glad to be cuddled up but then stays out from house for a day long or more and drinks more water than he does in summer.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Hummm...strange set of signs. Is your cat eating okay? Any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss? Is he urinating normally? Have you made any change in his diet?

I'm not sure why he is staying out of the house but as long as he is otherwise acting normal (eating, drinking, playful, urinating okay, etc) – I probably would not worry about that particular sign.

I am concerned about his drinking more. Increased thirst can be associated with several significant diseases including kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, and hyperactivity of the thyroid gland.

If you are concerned about his signs, I'd recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian to determine if there is an underlying medical problem.

An article that might be helpful to you is on Petplace.com, it is Polyuria & Polydipsia in Cats.

Best of luck!
