Our question this week was:Dr. Jon -I was wondering if you could address the issue of obtaining another cat as a companion? My present cat, Klaus, will soon be age 16, and until last year, when his sister died accidentally, he always had another feline companion. I have asked his doctor about this, and he said that was really up to me, but that if I did, to get a younger, smaller one so that Klaus could establish his dominance. Since this would be a long term decision, as it's not exactly like test driving a car, I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on this subject.Thank you.Jan FinleySpartanburg, SCAnswerHi – thanks for your email Jan. You asked if you should get another cat for your Klaus, you current cat that will soon 16-years-old. Great question. Getting another cat really depends on the situation and your current cat. I think another cat can work in your situation.
Determining whether to add another cat is a complex issue, but one you can solve with a little forethought and planning. Unfortunately, your cat can't tell you if he'd like company, and no barometer exists...
