Should I get another cat for my current cat?

By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

Dr. Jon -I was wondering if you could address the issue of obtaining another cat as a companion? My present cat, Klaus, will soon be age 16, and until last year, when his sister died accidentally, he always had another feline companion. I have asked his doctor about this, and he said that was really up to me, but that if I did, to get a younger, smaller one so that Klaus could establish his dominance. Since this would be a long term decision, as it's not exactly like test driving a car, I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on this subject.

Thank you.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Jan. You asked if you should get another cat for your Klaus, you current cat that will soon 16-years-old.

Great question. Getting another cat really depends on the situation and your current cat. I think another cat can work in your situation.

Should you decide to get another cat – I'd consider a kitten that is the opposite sex as your current cat and fix it as soon as possible. This will allow your cat to feel like "boss".

I have an article that is really good – it goes through the pros and cons and issues about getting another cat. I think you will like it. Go to: Should I Get Another Cat?

Best of luck!
