Top Entry Litter Box – A Vet's Thoughts on Top Entry Litter Boxes

Keyword: top entry litter box

One popular type of litter box is a top entry style. These litter boxes include an opening at the top where cats climb down, versus traditional boxes where cats walk in at one end.

Many cat lovers have asked whether top entry litter boxes are better or healthier for their cats.

The answer is no. In my experience many cats will refuse to use them, and I think they create more problems than they solve.

In nature, when a cat is preparing to go to the bathroom they want to feel safe. When they are eliminating they are unable to defend themselves and thus are very vulnerable.

This instinct is one reason why many cats will refuse boxes which are top entry or hooded style-they cannot see out of them to look for potential "predators" and thus do not feel safe in them.

The ideal litter box should be in an area that is safe, quiet, and lets a cat feel protected. A clear box with an easy exit is ideal as it lets cats feel they can escape if needed.

I hope this gives you more information about top entry litter boxes and why they may not be the right choice for your cat.
