What can I do for my cat’s constipation?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Jon - I never see anything on the site and links about constipation in cats. Lexi a full figured neutered calico (female of course) has presented with weight loss off her feed and then no stools. Voiding was normal. X-rays showed no blockage except for stool. Over the course of treatment she received three enemas, , IV fluids. All tests, blood, stool, etc were normal. Lexi is on a liquid stool softener 3 times a day, which isn't fun. She will only eat dry food and is finicky about that. I've spent a small fortune trying every product on the market wet and dry with no success. She now moves her bowels maybe 2 times a week. Is off her feed at least two days a week. Is still skinny and other wise fine except for the arguments we get into over her meds!

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote that your full-figured calico has problems with constipation. We actually have a couple articles on this that may be very helpful to you. Please read Constipation in Cats.

My favorite different treatments for constipation in cats include weight loss (constipation seems more common in overweight cats), adding fiber to the diet (trying Hills R/D, W/D or adding bran/pumpkin to the food), regular exercise, access to plenty of fresh water (even an electric waterer can stimulate some cats to drink), and a drug called Cisapride (that can stimulate that colon to contract). Another article that might be helpful is Megacolon in cats. This is a different condition than constipation but has very similar treatments and tips like dealing with constipation in cats.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
