What does the abbreviation MC mean on a medical chart?
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

Hi Dr. Jon – I just picked my cat up from the vet and noticed that it says he is 6-years-old and "MC". What does MC mean? Does he have a medical problem?

Robert M. - Fort Lauderdale, FL

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Robert. MC is an abbreviation for Male castrated. Most pets medical records will have their age, breed and sex at the top. The sex is usually labeled as follows:

M = male
F = female
MI = male intact
MC = male castrated
FS = female spayed
FI = female intact

The exact abbreviations vary among the different clinics but the above covers most of them. So the MC on your cats chart most likely means that he is a castrated male.

Best of luck!
