Why is my cat always hungry?
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

My cat is a short haired domestic male he is a indoor and outdoor cat but he is always hungry?

Faye Roche

Answer

Hi Faye– thanks for your email. You wrote that you think your cat is always hungry. He is indoor outdoor. I'm not sure how old he is or how active he is or if his weight is ideal.

Some cats eat more than others. Some cats burn more energy than others. Most indoor outdoor cats will burn more calories that indoor only cats. If your cat seems healthy, is active and playful, and is maintaining his body weight – then I wouldn't worry. If he looks or acts sick, is lethargic, or he is older and seems hyperactive – than I'd have him examined.

There are a few medical conditions that are associated with over-eating such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism. For more information on these conditions, please read Polyphagia in Cats (over eating in cats).

Best of luck!
