Common Diseases and Disorders
In general, the Dogue of Bordeaux is a healthy dog with few medical concerns. However, the following diseases or disorders have been reported:
Gastric torsion (bloat) is a life-threatening sudden illness associated with the stomach filling with air and twisting.
Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint that results in pain, lameness and arthritis.
Panosteitis is an inflammation of the long bones during growth. It results in pain and lameness until the dog matures.
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a heart condition that results in a large, thin walled heart muscle.
Footpad Hyperkeratosis - is a condition that causes thickening of the footpad due to an excessive production of keratin. It is familial in this breed.
Due to his relatively short muzzle, the Dogue de Bordeaux is also prone to heat-related illness.
Life Span
The life span of the Dogue de Bordeaux is approximately 10 to 12 years.
