Common Diseases and Disorders

The following diseases have been reported in the greyhound:

  • Gastric torsion, also known as bloat, is a life-threatening sudden illness associated with the stomach filling with air and twisting.

  • Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint that results in pain, lameness and arthritis.

  • Fracture is a break in bone or cartilage can be common in this breed.

  • Von Willebrand's disease is a bleeding disorder than can cause uncontrollable bleeding.

  • Pannus is a disease of the eye resulting in inflammation.

  • Lens luxation is a dislocation or displacement of the lens within the eye.

  • Hypertension is an elevated blood pressure, also called systemic arterial hypertension,is an increase in the systolic or diastolic arterial blood pressure (ABP).

  • Thrombocytopenia is an abnormally low blood-concentration of platelets, which are blood cells that promote blood clotting

  • Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that causes uncontrollable bleeding.

  • Congenital Deafness can be present at birth.

    In addition, greyhounds are prone to difficulty delivering puppies, lacerations, lameness and arthritis.

    Life Span

    The life expectancy of the greyhound is approximately 10 to 12 years.
