Are cooked eggs okay for dogs?

By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

You said it could be dangerous to feed dogs raw eggs. Since I raise chickens for eggs, I often have extras and thought they were high in protein and good for dogs. However, even though my vet said it was ok to feed them eggs, I try to always cook them scrambled before feeding them. What are your feelings on this?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Feeding cooked eggs are okay for dogs some dogs. There is nothing they specifically needed in the eggs that dogs don't get from a good quality premium dog food but for most dogs, being fed a cooked egg it is not a problem.

I should mention that some dogs that have sensitive stomachs, that are not used to eating table scraps or dogs that are prone to pancreatitis can have gastrointestinal upset from eating eggs.

Regards,

Dr. Jon
