My Labrador has Mange
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

My seven year old labrador retriever has mange. The areas that she has hair loss have sort of thick, scabby skin. We've tried a few over the counter products and motor oil but nothing has worked. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of this?

Answer

There are a couple kinds of mange including most commonly Sarcoptic Mange and Demodicosis (Red Mange) . The underlying treament would depend on the diagnosis. I've never heard of over-the-counter products or motor oil being effective and infact motor oil can be dangerous to dogs.

Sarcoptic Mange and Demodectic Mange.

The best thing to do is to take your dog to your veterinarian and allow them to preform the tests that will diagnose the problem and give you an effective treatment.

Our question this week came Lauren, from Houston, Texas.
