Hi – thanks for your email Anita. You wrote about your miniature schnauzer and what you can do if he has hemorrhoids. I wonder why you think he might have hemorrhoids? Is he scooting (dragging his bottom across the floor)? Do you notice blood by his rectum? Is he grooming excessively? Dogs don't really get hemorrhoids.

In my experience – when clients ask me this question – the problem is due to anal gland problems. Anal glands are small glands that sit on each side of the rectum. Anal Glands are also called anal sacs. Sometimes they can become infected or impacted causing discomfort and discharge in dogs. Some dogs will scoot, lick or be painful. You may also notice discharge.

A couple articles that might be helpful to you are Anal Gland in dogs and Anal Sac Disease in Dogs. Another problem that dogs get is Rectal Prolapse in Dogs where part of the rectum protrudes through the anus.

I'd recommend that you see your veterinarian to check his bottom and determine the underlying problem.
