Choosing a Basenji

Common Diseases and Disorders

The basenji is a hardy African breed that has few known diseases.

  • Fanconi's syndrome, which is a disease of the kidneys that can progress to renal failure.

  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) a disease that causes nerve cells at the back of the eye to degenerate, leading to blindness.

  • Cataracts cause the lens of the eye to loose transparency and can result in blindness.

  • Urolithiasis is a condition affecting the urinary tract resulting in the formation of bladder stones.

  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a disease that causes nerve cells at the back of the eye to degenerate. The condition usually begins in older pets and can lead to blindness.


  • Protein-losing enteropathy is a nonspecific disease referring to conditions associated with excessive loss of plasma proteins into the gastrointestinal tract caused by numerous causes.

  • Coloboma - is a congenital absence of an ocular structure.


    Life Span

    The average life span of the basenji is approximately 13 to 14 years.
