For centuries he was used as a herder, hunter of small game and all around farm dog. This terrier is thought to be one of the oldest of the Irish breeds and shares ancestry with the Kerry blue terrier and Irish terrier. Although popular in Ireland, the breed wasn't well known in the rest of the world until it was first imported to the United States in 1946. Eventually, the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1973 as part of the terrier group.Appearance and SizeThe soft coated wheaten terrier is a medium sized terrier with a soft wavy hair coat.
