Our question this week was:

Dr. Jon - I have heard that Golden Retrievers smell bad, especially when they get wet, is this true? We live on a lake and currently have a yellow lab and was thinking of adding another dog to our family. But when I heard about their smell it made me worry. Do they smell more then others?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking if Golden retrievers smell bad – especially when they get wet. Well, I think all dogs can have an odor when they are wet. There is even a classic smell on the wine wheel (if you have ever been to a wine tasting) that refers to wet dog.

Some golden retrievers can have skin issues that can cause an odor but I don't think they are any better or worse than other breeds. You mentioned you have a Labrador retriever and they can have the same issues.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
