Dog with small cell tumor
By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

My 4 year old Labrador had a small cell tumor removed from the flap of his ear. We are awaiting path lab results for grading. We are devastated with this news.

What is the prognosis of this condition?

Maria Wright

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Sorry to hear your dog had a small cell tumor removed on his ear flap. The prognosis really depends on the size, aggressiveness and the grade of tumor that was removed. The lab pathology should be able to tell you that information. Some tumors are basically cured by being removed while others can metastasize or recur.

See what your vet says about the type of tumor and based on that – the prognosis. Additionally, once you know the type of tumor, you can search on our site and look for the specific type of tumor to help give you more information about the prognosis.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
