Someone told me that there is a new drug out that treat fat dogs? Do you know anything about it?

Hi – thanks for your email. Yes, recently a new drug was released called Dirlotapide (Slentrol™). It is an oral solution approved for use in dogs only to manage canine obesity. It should only be used as part of a complete program that includes a good quality food and exercise if possible.

According to the drug manufacturer (Pfizer), the drug works by blocking the assembly and release of lipoproteins into the bloodstream. The mechanism of action for producing weight loss is not completely understood. For more information on the drug, read the drug profile at Dirlotapide (Slentrol™)

The dose is adjusted monthly depending on how much weight the dog has lost and any side effects. The drug is so new; I don't have any experience with how well it works or any long-term complications.
