A while back a reader sent me a really interesting question that I wanted to share. It had to do with her dog's diet. She wrote:

"Dr. Debra, have you ever heard of the green bean diet for dogs? My dog is a 120-pound lab in about an 80-pound frame. My vet recommended the "green bean diet" for dogs. Do you know what it is and if it works?" (Molly D. Imperial, Missouri)

I have heard of this diet, and I had some information to share with Molly and her dog. To learn about it, go to: Green Bean Diet for Dogs.

Diets are frequently recommended for dogs struggling with obesity. Extra weight is common in dogs, especially those who are not very active or get a lot of treats. It is estimated that at least 1 in 3 dogs are heavier than they should be. If your dog is obese, here is a good article that talks about the causes and what you can do at home: Obesity in Dogs.

Obesity is really hard on a dog for multiple reasons. The extra weight can cause health problems and discomfort for your dog. Helping them stay healthy keeps them much happier. Overall, if your dog is obese I don't recommend the green bean diet but I do recommend weight loss techniques like more exercise and lower-calorie snacks.
