Head shaking - ear problem?

Head shaking - ear problem?

By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

About 10 days ago I took my Boston Terriers to be groomed at PetSmart. Since then they both shake their heads frequently and paw their ears. What could be causing this?

Answer

Hi Jan. Without looking at your dog's ears, I can't tell 100% but if I had to guess, I'd bet your dogs have ear infections. Shaking their heads and pawing at their ears are common signs. If you lift up the earflap and look in is it red? is there discharge? Those are also common signs of infection. I'd recommend taking them to your veterinarian were they can examine the ears and prescribe some medication that should treat the infection.

An article that might be helpful to you is Otitis Externa in Dogs (Ear Infections).

Best of luck!
