Homemade Treats for Special Occasions

Dug Out Bones

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup skim milk
  • 1 egg
  • dash of salt

    Preheat over to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, mix peanut butter, milk and egg. Add wet mixture to dry and mix well. Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shapes. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly brown. Makes 30 cookies.

    Baked Bulldog Bones

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup grated cheese
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon parsley

    Preheat oven to 375 F. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl, mixing well, then knead by hand to form a stiff dough. Roll out dough to 1/2 thick and cut into various shapes.
    Place cookies on a greased baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes. Cool completely before serving. Makes 30 cookies.

    Tooty Fruity Cookies

  • 8 ounces canned unsweetened crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

    Preheat oven to 350 F. In a mixing bowl combine pineapple, applesauce, egg and vanilla and mix thoroughly. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda in a separate bowl. Aadd this into the wet mixture and stir well. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Cool and serve. Makes 20 treats.

    Nutty Mutty Chewies

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup chopped peanuts

    Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix together applesauce, peanut butter, honey and egg in a bowl. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda and spices, then stir into the applesauce mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle chopped peanuts on top and pat down gently with your hand. Bake for 8-10 minutes then cool. Makes 25 cookies.
