It's important to give your dog a proper diet. But it's fun to share your food with your pet, too. Is there anything you can give your pup that is safe?

Sure, there is. But you have to know about the eating habits of dogs. The digestive system of dogs is different than yours so some foods that you enjoy may make your pet sick.

So, if you'd like to share your food occasionally, follow these guidelines:

  • Treats from the table should be occasional and in small amounts. Dogs can learn to enjoy your food and then they won't eat their own. And table scraps do not provide a balanced diet. Don't feed your dog directly from the table while you are eating or you may end up with a dog that begs and develops bad habits. Only give special treats away from the table and at times when you or your family is not eating. It is a good idea to give treats when your pet has followed a command, such as sit, stay, roll over or shake.

  • Lots of dogs like vegetables. Small pieces of fresh vegetables such as carrots make a good treat, especially if your dog is on a diet.

  • Of course, dogs love small pieces of meat. But make sure that it's cooked and that you remove any bones.

  • I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! And your pup does, too. If you can bring yourself to share, your pup can have an occasional special treat of ice cream in small amounts.

If any of these items cause diarrhea within a day or two, then make sure you don't give it to him anymore. Remember, treats from your table should be given only occasionally, and it should never be more than 10 percent of your dog's daily intake. Your pet needs a balanced diet provided in dog food.
