Our question this week was:

My dog was bred 70 days ago. She is pregnant – what should I do?

Robert E.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Normal gestation in a dog is approximately 60 to 65 days – the average is 63 days. Seventy days is too long. I'd recommend that you take your dog to your veterinarian for evaluation. They may want to induce labor or perform a c-section.

A couple articles that may be helpful are – Pregnancy in Dogs and C-section (Cesarean) in Dogs. Also – this article on Dystocia in Dogs (problems with birthing) may be useful.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
