Recently I received a letter for a woman who lost a beloved cat too soon and wishes that she had made the decision to get pet insurance. Joanne Smith in Long Valley, New Jersey writes about a fantastic cat named Shilo. He is the love of Joanne's life and has been a part of her home for nine years. She had adopted him when he two years-old from a local animal shelter.

Shilo arrived skinny and Joanne thought he might be suffering from malnutrition. She immediately got him on a good diet and had him checked out at the veterinarian. He was free of any disease, except for a mild ear infection which the vet gave her medicine to treat. And then, because she had no way of knowing how he spent the first few years of his life, Joanne bought pet insurance for him.

Joanne says that she knew she might never need the extra insurance, but didn't want to take any chances. There are many diseases that are common to cats and are expensive to treat and even to diagnose. Some cats are healthy until the day they leave us for the rainbow bridge. All the same, Joanne didn't ever want to have to make a decision on care based on the cost of the care. It was easier for her to pay for pet insurance than it would be to pay for a major medical incident.

Although Joanne was hoping that Shilo would never need his insurance, she didn't hesitate to take him to the vet when he began to act odd. Shilo was using the litter box more frequently than usual and meowing when he tried to urinate. Joanne knew that cat's often have problem with their urinary tract and got him to the vet right away. It was a good thing she did. Shilo had a urinary obstruction, which can be deadly if left untreated. Although, treatment usually solves the problem, there were many tests that had to be done and ultimately Shilo had to be anesthetized and have a catheter inserted.

Shilo made a full recovery and Joanne never had to worry about the cost of the procedure and medication. She has to keep an eye on him to make sure the problem doesn't reoccur, but she knows how to help keep him healthy and how to watch for symptoms. She also knows that her pet insurance will be there when she needs it. She hopes everyone will consider pet insurance for their own furry loved-ones.
