Periodically weighing your dog can help you determine the overall health of your companion. For small dogs, a typical bathroom scale can be used. First, weigh yourself. Then, weigh yourself holding your pet. The difference between the two numbers will give you a close approximation of your pet's weight. For dogs too heavy to hold, consider taking your pet to a veterinary hospital. They usually have walk-on type scales and are generally quite happy to share.
