Answer

Hi Barbara – thanks for your email. You wrote asking what are the recommendations for giving vitamins to puppies and adult dogs?

The recommendation is this: If you feed a good quality premium food, you don't need to give your dog vitamins. If you feed a lesser quality food, then vitamins are probably a good idea.

The same goes for puppies. If you feed a good quality puppy food (a premium good quality brand) – then you really don't need to give vitamins.

A couple articles that might be helpful to you are Vitamin Toxicity in Dogs, Vitamin deficiency? and Nutrition in Dogs.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
