Dr. Jon – what is in Coyote bait that kills them?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email and question. You wrote – what is in Coyote bait that kills them? The active ingredient in most coyote bait – is strychnine.

Generally strychnine causes seizures and death within minutes to hours after ingestion. Dogs can also ingest it causing toxicity or death.

An article that might be helpful to you is Strychnine Poisoning in Dogs.

This will give you an idea of what it causes and how it works and how it is treated.

Best of luck!

Dr. Jon
