What should I feed my puppy?

What should I feed my puppy?

By: Dr. Jon Rappaport

Our question this week was:

I'm about to get a Chihuahua mix puppy. What type of food do you recommend? Is it a good idea the all breed puppy food?

Veronica Rivera

Answer

Hi Veronica – thanks for your email. Congratulations on your new puppy! I recommend that you feed your new puppy a good quality premium food that is AAFCO approved.

AAFCO is the Association of American Feed Control Officials. This group works to research food, review feeding trials and nutrient profiles and establish guidelines for pet nutrition. A food that has been AAFCO approved has met these guidelines. The food should be formulated to meet the needs of a puppy.

The all breed puppy food is okay as long as it is AAFCO approved. Premium foods such as Hills Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin do a good job at providing quality ingredients formulated to meet the needs of puppies.

Best of luck!
