I have a 5-week-old puppy, why does he bleed a little bit when he poops?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. Blood during or with defecation is not normal. It can be caused by several abnormalities including dietary issues, parasites (worms) or viral diseases including parvoviral enteritis. I'd recommend having your puppy seen by your vet and taking in a fecal sample so they can help determine the underlying cause.

A couple articles that might be helpful to you are Colitis in Dogs, Hematochezia (Blood in Stool) in Dogs and Acute Diarrhea in Dogs.

Best of luck!
