Overview

  • Bravecto™ is a drug that provides flea and tick control for dogs. It contains antiparasitic agents used to kill and prevent fleas and ticks.
  • Bravecto™ is the FDA approved oral tablet for treatment and prevention of flea and ticks infestations. The active ingredient in Bravecto™ is Fluralaner. The company claims that Bravecto is the "first and only treatment that has been shown to quickly and effectively kill fleas and multiple tick species for 12 weeks in a single dose". Fluralaner is a new ectoparasiticide belonging to the isoxazoline group.
  • The product is indicated to kill fleas for 12 weeks, the black-legged tick, American dog tick and brown dog tick for 12 weeks, and the Lone Star tick for eight weeks.
  • Bravecto™ is an oral tablet.
  • Bravecto™ is a Prescription drug and can only be obtained from a veterinarian or by prescription from a veterinarian.

    Uses of Bravecto™

  • Bravecto™ is used in the control and treatment of adult flea infestations and tick infestations in puppies and dogs. For more information on flea infestations, please see Flea Infestation in Dogs. For more information about Tick Infestations – go to Tick Infestation in Dogs.
  • Immediate and persistent flea-killing activity of the common flea for 12 weeks (Ctenocephalides felis)
  • Immediate and persistent tick-killing activity for 12 weeks of the following ticks: Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Dermacentor variabilis.
  • Immediate and persistent tick-killing activity for 8 weeks against the Lone Star Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus).
  • Bravecto™ may benefit pets with Flea Allergy Dermatitis.

    Precautions and Side Effects

  • While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, Bravecto™ can cause side effects in some animals.
  • Bravecto™ should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.
  • Bravecto™ is approved for use in dogs and puppies over 6 months of age.
  • Bravecto™ may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to discuss using other medications when your pet is on Bravecto™.
  • Bravecto™ is an oral agent. The most common side effects noted were vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, drinking more and gas (flatulence).
  • Product is not approved for use in cats.

    How Bravecto™ is Supplied

  • Bravecto™ is available as a flavored oral chewable tablet.

    It is dosed by body weight. Available sizes include:

    112.5 mg – for dogs 4.4 to 9.9 pounds
    250 mg – for dogs 9.9 to 22 pounds
    500 mg – for dogs 22 to 44 pounds
    1000 mg – for dogs 44 to 88 pounds
    1400 mg – for dogs 88 to 123 pounds

    Dosing Information for Bravecto™

  • Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.
  • The dose of Bravecto™ for preventative flea control is administration of the product every 12 weeks throughout the flea season and every 8 to 12 weeks through tick season.
  • Bravecto™ should be administered with food to maximize effectiveness.
  • Treatment can begin any time of year but should ideally begin 1 month prior to flea or tick season.
  • The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects. The manufacturer suggests monthly treatments to protect against flea re-infestation. Be certain to complete the prescription unless specifically directed by your veterinarian.
