Permethrin (Kiltix®, ProTICall®, K9 Advantix®)

Overview

  • Insecticides have been around for many years. One of the more popular insecticides belongs to a group known as pyrethrins. These medications are placed on the animal's skin to kill fleas and ticks.
  • Pyrethrins were originally developed from the Chrysanthemum plant and work by affecting the nervous system of the insect, resulting in death.
  • As science progressed, synthetic forms of pyrethrins were developed, including permethrin. This product has more stability and potency than the natural pyrethrins.
  • Permethrins are able to repel various species of ticks before they have a chance to attach.
  • This drug has residual action and is only applied once a month.
  • Permethrin is available without a prescription but should not be administered unless under the supervision and guidance of a veterinarian.

  • This drug is registered for use in animals only.
  • Human formulations: None
  • Veterinary formulations: Kiltix® (Bayer), ProTICall® (Schering-Plough), K9 Advantix® (Bayer) and various over-the-counter formulations

    Uses of Permethrin

  • Permethrins are used to kill fleas and ticks in dogs.

    Precautions and Side Effects

  • While generally safe and effective when prescribed by a veterinarian, permethrin can cause side effects in some animals.
  • Permethrin should not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to the drug.
  • Permethrins should never be used in cats.
  • This drug should be avoided in geriatric or very ill or weak animals.
  • Homes with cats that are known to groom dogs should not use this product.
  • Permethrins are recommended in dogs over 7 weeks of age.
  • Adverse effects of the drug are minimal if used properly. Redness of the skin in the area of the drug application may occur.
  • Dogs that lick the product may drool or vomit.

    How Permethrin is Supplied

  • Permethrin is available in 45 percent concentration and 65 percent concentration. The drug is a liquid packaged in precisely measured 1.5 ml tubes.
  • K9 Advantix® is available as permethrin combined with imidacloprid.

    Dosing Information

  • Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.
  • For dogs under 33 pounds, one applicator tube is used. The drug is applied on the skin between the shoulder blades.
  • For dogs 33 to 65 pounds, two applicators are used.
  • For dogs over 65 pounds, four applicators are used.
  • The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects.
