You may think of reptiles as sluggish creatures that require little care but this is not true. Whether you chose to own a snake, a lizard or a frog, several things need to be considered. Reptiles need proper housing and appropriate healthy food. They also require your time; although reptiles don't need to be walked several times a day, they still need proper care and this takes time.

Amphibians, such as frogs and salamanders, require a lot of time. Daily care is necessary to keep their environment clean and moist as well as making sure food is always available. Amphibians are very sensitive to the effects of their environment. Their terrarium, including the water, must be kept very clean in order to prevent illness and help your pet thrive.

Turtles and tortoises also require a lot of time. Many species need fresh food daily. Though turtles can survive without daily care, their cages must be kept clean and fresh food and water must be available.

Many adult lizards need care several times a week. Feeding and cage cleaning is typically not a daily requirement but is often needed every few days. Each species is different and time requirements vary. Green iguanas should be offered fresh food at least every other day, if not daily. Leopard geckos are typically fed every 2 to 3 days. Research the time requirements needed for your reptile before bringing him home.

Of all reptiles, snakes usually need the least amount of care. Most are fed 1 to 2 times a week and cage cleaning is not a daily chore. Even though snakes do not need as much care as amphibians, they still need proper feeding and husbandry.

Adding a pet to a family should not be done on impulse. This is especially true for reptiles. Remember, before acquiring a reptile, make sure you have the necessary equipment, housing, as well as time. These creatures are completely dependent on you for their survival. Providing for their well being is your responsibility.
