My mother was given a beagle puppy in October 1998. A month later mom had surgery and was to be in the hospital for two weeks. I agreed to go to her home and feed/spend time with her new pup, Boots. He was a fiesty little thing and during the first week was able to destroy a few things in her home. I decided to take this little bundle of energy home with me. It was a good move for him. He settled down in no time. When mom returned home she was still not able to take care of him and so he remained with me. His stay became weeks, then months and now nine years later, he is still my dog. He didn't like his name ... would never answer to it when called. So, one day at his Vet's office we decided to call out different names as he sat looking at us. He didn't move until I said the name Robert; then, he barked loudly with his head held high in the air. He has been called Robert since that time. His Vet just calls him "Trouble" mainly because of all of the problems that he has suffered through. Robert has a chronic yeast infection in his ears, allergies, asthma, and this year he developed a tumor on his spleen. The prognosis wasn't good and his Vet wasn'tsure that surgery would help. I took him to a larger city and had tests ran that would help determine if the tumor was non-cancerous. I had faith and the other doctors agreed that it would be worth trying the surgical route. We did and he is still here. His splenectomy was in August (on his birthday) and he came home two days later. He is doing very well and still goes for periodic check-ups on the surgical area. His Vet said that it was one of the largest, non-cancerous tumors he had ever seen.Sometimes I can just look at this dog and know what he is thinking. He always understands what I am saying to him ... maybe it is because during his grooming session each day, I talk to him constantly. When my husband says something to him the reaction is different. Robert turns his head from side to side as if to say that he doesn't understand a word. I really believe that it was intended for him to find his way to me. We were just meant to be together.
