My husband and I stayed in New Orleans for Katrina so after the storm we were stuck. We live outside the French quarter. We didn’t flood but all around us did. We couldn’t get out. It was not safe as lots of other people were also scared as I was. They were breaking into stores and getting drunk and the bad ones were taking over. We have 2 German shepherd dogs; both rescue dogs that came from terrible homes. I had to find a way out.
Our cells didn’t work so I went to see if I could find a pay phone. I took Comet with me and went to find a pay phone and I found one but there was 3 feet of water I had to wade and Comet swam as I was waiting for the phone I looked over and a man was stabbing a woman and he was drunk or on drugs. He was a few feet away. I got out of line to go back home and he looked up at me and Comet growled and barked and he thought better and ran away from the woman. Comet saved the woman and me.
Latter that night Comet and Duke slept in the car as people were trying to take it to try to get out of New Orleans. We did find a way out 3 days after the storm. As we were leaving so many people were begging us to take them with us. As I told them we didn’t have room they were telling us to leave the dogs and take them. We wouldn’t have a car or me if it weren’t for Comet & Duke. We are ok and back home and yes things are hard but I have my heroes Comet and Duke.
