German Shepherd Dog - More than a K9 Officer, a Best Friend

German Shepherd Dog - More than a K9 Officer, a Best Friend

By: Sgt. Kevin Griffith - Tifton, Georgia

I am a Police Sergeant in Tifton, Georgia. Before becoming a Sergeant, I had the pleasure of being a K9 Officer and handler for 5 years. My Partner, a female German shepherd named "Miko" quickly became my best friend. We shared many happy times together during our long working hours.

"Miko" is responsible for myself earning several outstanding awards such as Southwest Georgia Police Officer of the Year in 2004 and earning The Ray D Merritt award in my community. As a team we made around 300 Narcotic Drug cases and hundreds of arrests.

Not only was she a dedicated police officer, "Miko" helped to teach the children in our community about drug use and the effects. She taught me how to depend on other people for help and gave me the courage to be a dedicated, responsible police officer. She also taught me the importance of teaching our children about drug use and its dangerous side effects.
Unfortunately in January of 2006, a week after "Miko's" retirement at the age of 9 years, she was fatally injured. My family and I have suffered an enormous loss of a true, loyal companion, and our community has lost a hidden hero. She was "the wind beneath my wings" because she gave me the courage to perform my job beyond my expectations. My dreams are to own another K9 Police dog again in the near future.

"Miko" will never be forgotten in my heart and I want everyone to know that she deserves full credit for all of our hard teamwork.
