Golden Retriever - Acie's near fatal accident

Golden Retriever - Acie's near fatal accident

By: Betsy Baggett - Greenville, North Carolina

Acie is my granddog; my two children are married and have made the decision not to have children; my son and his wife have adopted two rescued golden retreivers and they have now become my granddogs.

Acie was the first golden adopted and even though my husband and I live in North Carolina, Acie is with my son, Luke, and his wife, Heather, in Texas. I fell in love with Acie instantly when we saw him the first time; he is around three years old.

Last Sunday, Oct. 21st, Acie and his "brother" Boston, were taken on their weekly fetch and swim area; their usual "launching pad" and swim area was not available so they were taken to another pier on the same river not too far from their usual swimming place. Acie loves to swim and fetch; when he jumped into the water he landed in the top of a tree which was not visable to the naked eye. He became entangled and stuck in the tree because of punctures to his leg and belly area. My son and others had to help remove him from the tree; he was immediately in unbelievable pain and taken to an emergency animal hospital where his wounds were cleaned as well as the staff were trained to do and put on antiobiotics; the next morning, my son and daughter-in-law picked him up and took him to Acie's regular veterinarian, who immediately called a critical care veterinarian hospital and Acie was taken there for treatment.

The three vets gave him a 1% chance of survival, opened his wounds back up, cleaned his more thoroughly and began interveinous antiobiotic and pain medication. He survived the first three days in the critical care unit (much to everyone's amazement) and was then transferred to the critical surgical unit where he has begun surgeries to remove the dead tissue and bacteria from his wounds.

Cultures were grown to determine the exact forms of bacterial infection he is fighting and there are two; one treatable by tablet form but the other only by interveinious doses. His first surgery was wednesday, and he was severely swollen and nonresponsive on thursday; friday they began forced feeding him to provide much needed protein, and as of now is still in critical condition. I'm asking all who read this story pray for Acie and his families; his will be a long recovery of skin graphs, new tissue growth, and more skin graphs. Thank you for your prayers.
