Mac is a big boy! He came to us from Michigan's golden retriever rescue. Mac was found abandoned at approximately 4 months of age. He came to our house at age 6 months and has not let us out of his sight in 5 years. He is an eager to please goof ball. He has separation anxiety and is fearful of thunder and fireworks; nothing like a 90 pound golden retriever landing on your chest in the middle of the night!
He is stressed by new things in the neighbor's yard; producing a few low woofs before heading back into the safety of the house. He has protected us from tents; new lawn furniture and rakes just to name a few.
Mac lives on a lake but is allergic to lake water so unfortunately, no swimming for Mac. He is intimidated by swans and will not go outside until he is sure that there are any within eyesight. He LOVES boat rides and can be found sitting on the pontoon waiting to see if anyone will come down and give him a ride (which has turned out to be a very successful strategy, who can resist that golden retriever smile).
He prefers to retrieve live frogs, toads, turtles and occasionally a fledgling bird; he never hurts them but they do get a bit wet. His favorite toy is a Hallmark Kiss-Kiss bear; I buy them in bulk on Ebay. Mac loves to lie on the couch and will wait until his blanket is put over the cushion. He does not know that his head weighs as much as a small dog and that his body will not fit in our lap - but he keeps trying.
He thinks that everyone comes to our house just to see him! Mac is not a barker but a whinner-talker. His best pal is Shadow our rescued golden retriever black lab mix. Shadow is 13 and not in the best of health. Mac has taken to lying down next to her and licking her face until her face and head are wet - she seems to love it (for about 5 minutes).
The loss of Shadow will be difficult for him. A new young friend will join Mac and Shadow very soon; we are looking at an 8-week-old rescued golden-lab puppy this weekend! Shadow is great with puppies and this will give her a chance to do a little mothering. Mac also loves babies (animal and people babies) and he will have a friend who is able to run and play with him again. Nothing like a dog or two to make a gloomy day bright!
