Labrador Retriever - Nashville Not Handicapped at all

Labrador Retriever - Nashville Not Handicapped at all

By: Sue Gagnon

Nashville, originally named Elvis, was rescued from a local pound at what we were told between 3 and 5 years of age. It was later determined that he was much older. He was blind from cataracts, had glaucoma and heartworm. We treated the heartworm, treated the glaucoma for a while and then had the eyes removed to eliminate his pain.

He became a Delta Society Pet Partner therapy dog, a Hospice therapy dog and a R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog). He was featured in newspapers in Connecticut and Rhode Island for his accomplishments and was the guest of honor at the opening of an art exhibit about animals in our lives.

He inspired many people when he visited with his trusting attitude and wagging tail. His health began to deteriorate over the past year but he continued to visit on a limited basis.

He passed on today, New Year's Day, 2007 in his sleep, at home on his couch. My husband and I miss him terribly but know of all the good deeds he did during his short stay with us (6 years) will be remembered by many.
