After 30 years of marriage, 3 grown sons and 4 dogs I decided it was time to move on with my life without my husband. Although he was shocked at first he came to accept the inevitable and we filed for divorce. Things went along very smoothly when it came to distributing the assets except for one thing; actually it was 3 things, our dogs, which we called the boyz. We both wanted custody. Our babies were the only topic on the table when our lawyers met with the judge to discuss the division of assets. His lawyer had a file with receipts proving he purchased the boyz so he should have custody. My lawyer said nothing until the judge asked if she had anything to say. And all she had to say was "they were gifts from him to her and are not considered part of the marriage assets. My then husband's lawyer leaned over and asked him if he purchased them for me as gifts? He had to tell the truth and said he had. The fate of the boyz was no longer in question and they came with me. The boyz are much older now, 15, 13 and 10 but they are all mine and I now realize I love them more then I ever loved my ex husband. I now have a significant other and we have added one more boy to our family.
