Our question this week was:
Dr. Debra – My name is Tiffany and my boyfriend Roger is allergic to my cat. He is fine when he comes over but then gets all red eyed and stuffy. If he says all night – by morning he is miserable. What can I do?
Tiffany, Roger and Muffin
Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote that your boyfriend is allergic to your cat and you would like some tips on what you can do to help the situation. This is tough Tiffany but there are some things you can do.
One thing is to keep your cat out of the bedroom when he is there. Sometimes this can greatly reduce his symptoms and allow him to get a decent night sleep.
Before he comes over – vacuum like crazy. One of the animal hair type vacuums (such as the Dyson) is very effective at removing cat hair. You can also wash bedding, wash slipcovers (slip covers are great on furniture), dust, mop floors and do a good overall cleaning.
Brush your cat at least once a day to remove dead hair. You can also wipe your cat with a damp cloth once or twice a day to help remove dead hair and dander. Periodic bathing is also an option – if your cat allows it.
An additional option is for your boyfriend to seek medical advice about his allergy.
