Our question this week was:
Dr. Debra – I have a 5-year-old male and 3-year-old female cat. My mother-in-law didn’t desex her cat and she now has kittens. I was going to take one from her but she only has males do you think this will upset my male cat he hates other strange cats? I don’t want to make him feel like he’s not boss anymore.

Answer
Hi Jackie– thanks for your email. You wrote that you have a 5-year-old male and 3-year-old female cat and are considering adopting a male kitten. Your male cat hates other strange cats and you don’t want to upset him.
That is a tough one with no prefect answer. There is no way to know how another cat will embrace a new cat. Some cats are funny. Most cats generally get used to another cat. What you do have going for you is that the new possible cat is a kitten. This should help your adult male cat still feel like “boss”.
How you introduce your new cat can also be important. Please read Introducing Your New Cat to Your Household before you bring him into your home.
Best of luck!
