Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking – “What is the difference between a cat litter box and a cat litter pan?

Interesting question. It’s funny Jenny – I thought this is an easy question. They are exactly the same thing. The terms Litter box, Litterbox, litter pan, litter pan and cat box are essentially all referring to the box that holds the litter.

However, your question made me research this.

Marketing companies use these terms interchangeable as well. The most common term is the litter box (two words) however it really depends on the area of the country. Some areas seem to say more litter box and others more litter pan.

However, upon further research – a litter pan is a little lower than a “box” and doen’t have a hood. A litter box could be deeper (like a box) and may include a hood or cover of some sort.
Generally – we believe cats prefer a big box without a hood. A clear box that is deep gives them the size and security they need. Some behaviorists recommend a clear plastic storage container bottom as an ideal litter box.

Of course, it is also important to not only have the right litter and the box be clean.
