My cat is hiding – how do I get him to come out and eat?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – I am worried about my cat twinkle. I have recently taken him to my mum’s house for the summer holidays but he has been under the wardrobe for nearly a week. He comes out at night for a bit of food and water but I am worried that he is not having enough, any tips or ideas to try to encourage him out, he is only 8 months old and very shy. Please help.

Hi – thanks for your email Kristal. You wrote that your cat is at your mother’s house and hiding. You are worried if he is not getting enough to eat and want to know what to do.

I’d recommend that someone sit in the room and talk to your cat – and just “be around”. Hopefully – given time – he will come around and feel more comfortable. The combination of a new home, different smells, different people, different sounds can cause a lot of stress to some cats.

Again, have someone spend time with him and talk to him. Make sure the room has several of his toys and bedding with his favorite smells. Encourage him to eat and drink. Place out fresh food. If he doesn’t eat or drink or shows any sign of illness – see your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Best of luck!
