Are grapes and raisins bad for cats?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – are grapes and raisins bad for cats? My cat just licked a raison that I dropped on the floor. She didn’t eat it.

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email Brenda. You wrote asking if raisin or grapes are toxic or dangerous to cats. As you may know, a few years ago – raisins and grapes were found to be toxic to dogs. Some dogs will react to this ingestion which can cause kidney failure. Other dogs can be unaffected and they are not sure why.

This problem has not been documented in cats. I don’t know why this is – if it is because cats are pickier about what they eat and therefore don’t ingest raisons and grapes as often or don’t ingest as many or it is just not documented or proven.
