Does catnip deter roaches?

Our question this week was:

Dr. Debra – someone told me that catnip also could act as an insect repellent. Have you ever heard this?

Answer

Hi – thanks for your email. You wrote asking if I have heard of catnip deterring cockroaches.

Catnip does have natural repellent properties. I personally don’t have experience with this but I’ll tell you what I know.

First, if you have roaches in your home – you may want to check out the home improvement section at a home improvement stores such as Lowes or Home Depot. They have some products that are very effective that the roach will eat or take back to his nest. This is an important aspect of roach control.

As far as the catnip – I think it can help but not sure if it would be a sole solution – especially if you have a substantial problems. What I have heard is that you make a catnip tea – simmer catnip in hot water and allow it to cool. Then place it in a spray bottle. Spray the roaches or areas where you don’t want them to go can act as a deterrent.

Best of luck!
