How can I get my cat to stop jumping on counters?

Our question this week was:

My cat has just recently started jumping on counters mostly the kitchen counters but sometimes the bathroom counter too, she doesn’t sniff on the counter or try to find food, she just gets up there. I have gotten on to her and told her no but she just looks at meows and me as if talking back to me (she’s very smart). What can I do to keep her off these counters? She does have a cathouse to lay or stand on that high off the ground but perhaps not enough high places?

Hi – thanks for your email. Cats on counters are a common problem. They like high places and are naturally curious. It is so common that in fact – we had a behaviorist – Dr. Nicholas Dodman- wrote an article about it.
